Increase your chances of winning at video poker by following a few simple rules for holding or discarding the first 5 cards that you have been dealt.
- Always hold a royal flush, straight flush, 4 of a kind, full house, 3 of a kind, or 2 pair. However, with 3 of a kind, discard remaining two cards for an opportunity at 4 of a kind while leaving full house chances open, and with 2 pair, discard the 5th card for an opportunity at a full house.
- Break up a flush or a straight only when you have 4 cards to a royal flush. Namely, if you have ace-king-queen-jack- nine, all of clubs, discard the nine to get an opportunity at the big payoff for the ten of clubs. That still leaves open the chances of a flush with any other club, a straight with any other ten, and a pair of jacks or better with any ace, king, queen, or jack.
- Break up a pair of jacks or better if you have 4 cards to a royal flush or 4 cards to a lower straight flush.
- Keep a low pair rather than a single high card (jack, queen, king, or ace).
- Don’t draw to a 4 card inside straight — one in which the missing card is in the middle rather than on either end — unless it have at least 3 high cards. A 4 card open straight is one that has space open at either end to complete the hand; for example, a hand of 5-6-7-8 can use either a 4 at one end or a 9 at the other to complete the straight. An inside straight has space in the middle that must be filled so that the hand can be completed; 5-7-8-9 needs a 6 to become a straight. Open straights offer you a better opportunity, with twice as many cards offered to fill the straight.
- There are two important things that you must always keep in mind. First, manage your bankroll. Second, don’t over bet your bankroll. If a machine is available at which you can easily play the maximum number of coins, do so. If you are sitting down to play with $10, you don’t belong at $1 machine that will take up to $5 at a time. It is better to play 5 quarters at a time than $1 at a time. Although video poker machines offer a high proportion of the money put into them, the payouts are changeable. It is not odd to go 5 or 10 or more following hands with no payout. Don’t play at a level at which you do not have the money to ride out a streak.
